Title: IDCAMS BACKUP using SYNONYMLIST requires un-needed

           SOURCEVOLUMES

Detailed Problem Description: The IDCAMS BACKUP allows use of a SNAPPED

Catalog using the SYNONYMLIST.   The SOURCEVOLUMES must be  available and accessible with READ/WRITE capabilities even though the physical data is taken from the TARGETVOLUMES.   The TARGETVOLUMES should only be indicated for establishing the volume to volume relationship of the IDCAMS BACKUP.

Priority: (Select one: Urgent - High - Medium - Low)                                       HIGH

Requested Completion Date:                                                                                                   6 months

Requirement Type:    Function- performance-reliability/availability/serviceability

Business Justification:     IDCAMS SNAP does the instanteous backup of SourceVolumes to TargetVolumes.   The SourceVolumes are irrelevant after the SNAP has completed.  During the IDCAMS BACKUP using the SYNONYMLIST, the  SourceVolumes add unnecessary overhead within the locking mechanism on the on the z/VSE system.  The TargetVolumes could be  linked/attached to a separate z/VM backup System for better Operation management.

Solution:   Remove the requirement that during a IDCAMS BACKUP with SYNONYMLIST that the SourceVolumes need to be physically/logically available.

Impact:   Aultman Hospital is a 24/7 full function hospital.  The current batch cycle takes about 4 hours with limited availablity for some functions.

The IDCAMS SNAP and IDCAM BACKUP with SYNONYMLIST would cut the batch cycle by 1-2 hours.  Files could be available for  real time processing in a shorter amount of time.  Patient Health information would be available and revenue would be enhanced.
