WAVV Requirement Form

Date: 04/16/2007                                          Requirement #:  WAVV200709

Product Name:           VSE/VSAM          Product Release# (or state “current”): z/VSE 3.1

Vendor Name:           IBM

Title: (Paraphrase problem in a single statement)Remove 4GB limitation on SAM-ESDS

Detailed Problem Description: (Description of what you want changed - 400 character entry limit)

The limitation of 4GB has become a problem.  KSDS can now extend to beyond 4GB using the XXL parameter.  This makes large sequential files required to be on regular DASD extents and not in VSAM catalog space.

Priority: (Select one: Urgent - High - Medium - Low) High

Requested Completion Date: (When? Examples: 3 months, 1 year, Next Release) 3 months

Requirement Type: (Select one: Acceptability - Compatibility/Migration - Ease of Use - Feature/Function - Performance - Reliability/Availability/Serviceability - Packaging - Interoperability)

Compatibility

Business Justification: (Why? Non-technical business case description. Do not reword Detailed Problem Description from above. What are the benefits to be gained by your company, and the vendor and others?  Quantify: run time, dollars, manpower, etc.   Why should the vendor do this for the customer?)

Many sequential files can now be possible, for instance, virtual tape backups or IDCAMS repros of XXL KSDS files.  The 4GB limitation has become a stopping point in using VSAM space for large sequential files necessitating the use of regualr DASD extents, which is difficult for shops without a disk space management system.

Solution: (Optional)(Desired/undesired elements Note: Making a suggestion may limit a vendors ability to deliver a solution)

Ideally, this would apply to all "ESDS" types but restricting to SAM-ESDS would be acceptable.

Impact: (Optional) (How will your company’s business be affected if a solution is not delivered?)

Continual workarounds cause inconsistency in methodologies, resulting in more operations errors.
