Date: 08/29/2006                                          Requirement #:  WAVV200707

Product Name:           z/VM   Product Release# (or state “current”): Current

Vendor Name:           IBM

Title: (Paraphrase problem in a single statement)Provide and document IUCV system service for interacting with channel-attached tape libraries

Detailed Problem Description: (Description of what you want changed - 400 character entry limit)

Provide a documented interface to allow native systems and guests (particularly Linux) to manipulate channel-attached tape libraries without requiring library partitioning or device conversion to SCSI.

Priority: (Select one: Urgent - High - Medium - Low) High

Requested Completion Date: (When? Examples: 3 months, 1 year, Next Release) Next Release

Requirement Type: (Select one: Acceptability - Compatibility/Migration - Ease of Use - Feature/Function - Performance - Reliability/Availability/Serviceability - Packaging - Interoperability)

Feature/Function

Business Justification: (Why? Non-technical business case description. Do not reword Detailed Problem Description from above. What are the benefits to be gained by your company, and the vendor and others?  Quantify: run time, dollars, manpower, etc.   Why should the vendor do this for the customer?)

Currently, there is no documented interface to the library controller modules in channel attached libraries that is accessible from Linux. The IP interface currently provided in DFSMS/VM is incomplete and unreliable, and does not permit convenient manipulation of devices without partitioning the library. These devices represent substantial investments and are not likely to be replaced to accomodate SCSI-based commands currently understood by Linux.  Enabling these systems to have a common control interface that does not reveal the specifics of the channel protocol for the library (and does not require APPC) is necessary to allow Linux to leverage these devices effectively.

Solution: (Optional)(Desired/undesired elements Note: Making a suggestion may limit a vendors ability to deliver a solution)

A desired element would be to present the changer as a CP-managed system service, preferably one that could also accept SCSI command words such as produced by the mtx utility and translate those words to the equivalent channel-attached library functions/commands.

Impact: (Optional) (How will your company’s business be affected if a solution is not delivered?)

Further argument to remove the mainframe and replace with "more compatible" device.
