Ease of use.

Business Justification: (Why? Non-technical business case description. Do not reword Detailed Problem Description from above. What are the benefits to be gained by your company, and the vendor and others?  Quantify: run time, dollars, manpower, etc.   Why should the vendor do this for the customer?)

The County standard for VSAM File-Id’s is to use unsegmented File-Id’s, such as DT87400A, DT87400B, etc.  The DT87 denotes a specific agency/application.  There have been several cases where it would be desirable to backup a subset of the files in a VSAM Catalog, rather than the contents of the entire catalog.  For ease of use reasons, Backup is preferable to Repro.

Solution: (Optional)(Desired/undesired elements Note: Making a suggestion may limit a vendors ability to deliver a solution)

Allow generic Backup of files with unsegmented File-Id’s, and generic specifications  starting in the first segment of the File-Id.  Example:  Backup DT*  or BACKUP CICS*

Impact: (Optional) (How will your company’s business be affected if a solution is not delivered?)

Easier to backup a subset of files in a VSAM Catalog, fewer cartridges consumed, shorter backup runs, as the Backup is only backing up the files requested, rather than the entire contents of the Catalog.
