Title: (Paraphrase problem in a
single statement)Provide a way to verify
output from ckdbackup
Detailed
Problem Description: (Description of what you want changed - 400 character entry limit)
There is no way to know that
a backup created by ckdbackup is readable after it is created. The only way
currently is to actually perform a ckdrestore. This is not practical. There
needs to be a way to verify the contents of the ckdbackup output.

Justification: (Why? Non-technical
business case description. Do not reword Detailed Problem
Description from above. What are the benefits to be gained by your
company, and the vendor and others?
Quantify: run time, dollars, manpower, etc. Why should the vendor do this for the customer?)
My Disaster Recovery plan depends on a complete
backup to SDLT of all the volumes in my production system (134 total). I use
the ckdbackup utility for this. I would like to know that the backup files
created by ckdbackup are readable *before* I store the tape off-site. I have no
practical way of doing so.
Solution: (Optional)(Desired/undesired elements Note: Making a suggestion may limit a
vendors ability to deliver a solution)
Provide a new utility (ckdverify?), or add an
option to the existing ckdrestore, to "verify" the output created by
ckdbackup. All the utility needs to do is to read the complete ckdbackup file,
verifying tracks/cylinders and display some general information about the
backup (total number of tracks, etc).
Impact: (Optional) (How
will your company’s business be affected if a solution is not delivered?)
Being able to know that a full system backup is
good and readable before storing it off-site will provide great peace of mind
to any SysProg. Having to wait until a crisis arises where a restore is
necessary, only to discover that some of the backup files are unreadable, would
be a nightmare. We would know that if "verify" can read all the files
on the tape, then ckdrestore will be able to also.
