Detailed Problem Description: (Description of what you want changed - 400 character entry limit)

The current COBOL for VSE compiler complies with the 1985 COBOL standard and it's 1989 addendum.  A new ISO COBOL standard is now available that has many useful new features.  The COBOL for VSE compiler should be upgraded to support as many of these new features as possible.

Priority: (Select one: Urgent - High - Medium - Low) medium

Requested Completion Date: (When? Examples: 3 months, 1 year, Next Release) next release

Compatibility/Migration

Business Justification: (Why? Non-technical business case description. Do not reword Detailed Problem Description from above. What are the benefits to be gained by your company, and the vendor and others?  Quantify: run time, dollars, manpower, etc.   Why should the vendor do this for the customer?)

The 2002 ISO COBOL standard has many features that make COBOL more useful for modern systems, as well as being more similar to other programming languages.  It makes COBOL easier to use as well as more powerful.

Solution: (Optional)(Desired/undesired elements Note: Making a suggestion may limit a vendors ability to deliver a solution)

This could possibly be done as part of porting the z/OS Enterprise COBOL compiler to VSE, assuming that the z/OS compiler is also upgraded to meet the new COBOL standard.

Impact: (Optional) (How will your company’s business be affected if a solution is not delivered?)

Makes is harder to implement more modern business functions, since they are not supported by the current COBOL compiler.
