Title : DASD Architecture Constraint
Relief for Data per Volume
(Short description of what you want the
product changed to - include keywords like function, short product name)
Statement of
the Problem : (What? Detailed description of what you want
changed, 400 char.limit)
The addressing limit of DASD
has become a limiting factor in utilizing the latest hardware. Cost per megabyte continues to drop by 50%
per year while disk density has doubled every 15 months for the past five years. To fully utilize a new DASD array, hundres
or thousands of CKD addresses must be created and then manually managed. VSAM cannot address more than 4Gigabytes per
logical volume.
Benefit : (Why? Non-technical business
case description, i.e a business case. Do not reword problem statement
above. How do you to justify the needed
change? Wwill itrequest
benefit the submitter’s your company, and the vendor
and others? Business case
and benefits to users and vendor which can to
justify the needed change?. Quantify: run time, dollars, manpower, etc. Also, wWhy
should is it important
for vendor to want to do this for their
customer?s)
Reduction of margin for error in managing
DASD. Reduction in amount of time and
FTE's needed to manage growing databases.
Estimate that 75% of customers will benefit within 3 years.
Date : (When? ASAP, 6 months, one year from now, etc)
1 year
Impact : (How? How will your company’s business be
affected if a solution is not
delivered.)
Move away from mainframe DASD and VSE to Open
Systems technology for DASD storage.
Solution : (optional desired / undesired elements Note: suggest can limit vendor ability to deliver a solution)
One soulution is to change RAMAC devices to
allow FBA volumes to be defined with noarbitrary limit on the logical size of
each volume. At the same time, change
VSAM to allow 64-bit rather than 32-bit addressing per volume.
Classification : (Suggestion=Nice Idea, Long
Range=Future, Tactical=ASAP, or Acceptability=I won’t buy the product
or will drop the product if solution not provided)
