Provide a mechanism to
permit card image output created by one job step to be read as input by another
job step. The classic example of this
is the CICS preprocessor and COBOL compiler interaction.

There seems to be more instances of pre-processing so it becomes more
confusing all of the time. May also be
useful in application systems for passing "control" information from
one program to another.
